MY SPECIES “LIFE LIST”

(A List of Bird Species I Have Personally Observed and Photographed)

Prologue: Why I Decided To Become a Birdwatcher…

Me, a birdwatcher?  Why, the thought never crossed my mind during my first 65 years on the planet!  So, how did it come about that I now consider myself a birdwatcher (or perhaps, even a “birder”!)?  Well, a couple of years back, I ran across a small 40 acre ranch for sale in southeastern Arizona.  What intrigued me about this particular piece of property was the claim that it backed up to 87,000 acres of public land (the Chiricahua National Forest and Mountains) and had a prehistoric granary and petroglyphs right over the back fence.  Before Dorothy and I drove out there to look at the ranch, I was doing research about the area on the internet.  I ran across a blog written by a young couple who had literally hiked, biked, and camped all over the world.  In their blog, they talked about their visit to this area and said, if they were ready to settle down (which they weren’t), they would settle there.  They spoke glowingly of the unique, quirky, and generous people they encountered, most of whom they described as “birdwatchers”.  I have to say, this piqued my interest.

As Dorothy, Bitsy, and I set out on our little trip to scout my ranch, I decided we would leave on a Sunday afternoon and drive to South Llano River State Park so that we would not have to fight the Monday morning rush hour traffic in San Antonio.  We got to the park, set up our camp, and decided to take a walk to stretch our legs.  Guess what we ran into?  A bird blind and birder, after birder, after birder.  At the blind, I was smitten by the colorful birds and the peacefulness of sitting quietly and enjoying nature.  And the people we met were indeed unique, quirky, and generous!  By coincidence, most of them had visited the Portal/Paradise sky island area and spoke highly of those places.  The hook was baited, and, when we reached our destination, I took the bait.  We stayed at Rusty’s RV park and, you guessed it, it was primarily filled with birders.  We visited the private homes in Paradise, and enjoyed sitting on the porches of strangers and watching the birds.  In September of last year, I visited Australia, and Locky, my guide at Davidson’s at Mount Borradaille, was a passionate observer and photographer of the birds found there.  So, in March of 2020, as I looked for something for Dorothy and I to do to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary, I settled on Rockport.  We spent the bulk of our time there and I was delighted that we actually got to see a pair of Whooping Cranes in the wild at The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.  As we returned home, I had to admit to myself that, yes, I was a birdwatcher.  I also made a conscious decision to dedicate time each week to learn more about how to locate, photograph, and identify wild birds.  The great Corona Virus pandemic gifted me with plenty of time, so I set out to try to become a bona fide birdwatcher.  I am pleased to report that I am making progress.  In the last six plus weeks, I have read a lot and visited a number of birding hot-spots.  I also purchased a Nikon P1000 and have started trying to become proficient with it.  Today, buoyed by yesterday’s exhilaration of spotting my first Osprey at Salt Lake (near Luling, Texas), I decided to add this page to my website to display photos of all of the bird species that I have personally observed and photographed … my photographic “species list”.

Below you will find my species Life List.  As a sidenote, my species Life List is modeled after a checklist for the area where I live, generated on eBird.  To see the actual checklist, look here.  Click on the species name to see my photos and little about where I found and photographed the birds.  I hope you enjoy my attempt to share the beauty I have enjoyed.  Thanks for taking the time to take a look!
