White-winged Swallow Gallery
Tachycineta albiventer
The Birds of the World website offers these introductory words about the White-winged Swallow: The White-winged Swallow is a familiar sight over rivers through much of eastern South America, south to southern Brazil and northeastern Argentina. It often is found in pairs or in small groups, of up to a dozen or so individuals, that perch on snags in rivers and lakes. It’s flight is low over the water. White-winged Swallows are resident throughout most of its range, but it is a partial austral migrant: in southernmost Brazil, White-winged Swallows are present only during the austral summer.
I saw and photographed my first White-winged Swallows on the morning of August 19, 2023 in the Amazon Basin Region of Brazil. Our small group with Jeff Parker Tours was at Southwild’s Fazenda São Nicolau located on the Juruena River west of Alta Floresta. That morning we were up early for a boat ride on the river and we spotted several different White-winged Swallows at several locations. For a more detailed description of this day, look here at my blog post on my Brazil trip. Here are some of my photos of this cute little bird.
