THE MANSARD PETROGLYPH GALLERY

On the afternoon of March 16, 2018, I hiked up to the Mansard Petroglyph Site located outside of Kanab, Utah.  The site is well known, and the local tourists outlets in Kanab hand out instructions on how to get to the trailhead.  I enjoyed the hike up to the site, but must admit it seemed a lot longer than advertised (the BLM website says it is 3 miles round trip; look here for directions to the trailhead).  The trail climbs up to a ridge, which takes you over to the area where the Mansard Alcove is located.  The site itself is very interesting.  The petroglyphs are located on the floor of the alcove and the floor also contains several very prominent, and large, “grooves”.   I know of no other large grooves like this anywhere.  Michael Terlep, in his 2012 Master’s Thesis, argues they are linked to water ceremonies and “cup and channel glyphs”  (look here).  According to Terlep, a cup and channel glyph lies 1,230 feet south of the Mansard Alcove.  The petroglyphs at this site are also thought provoking.  Due to time constraints, I only spent about 30 minutes at the site  —  I would like to go back some day to more fully explore the alcove and to see if I can locate the cup and channel glyph Terlep discusses in his Thesis.  Hope you enjoy my photos!  To see the blog I wrote about the trip that included my visit to the Mansard Site, look here.
