The Sunburst Shelter Gallery
Dan A. Hughes Unit of The Devil’s River State Natural Area
I visited the Sunburst Shelter pictograph site on the the morning of Saturday, October 28, 2023. I was part of a SHUMLA Treks group that visited two rock shelters on the 18,000 acre property that is located on the Devil’s River in the Trans-Pecos Region of Texas. To read my blog about my visit to this site, look here. This is a small shelter, located in a side canyon of the Devil’s River. The pictographs found there are fairly well preserved and contain an eclectic mix of anthrpomorphs, zoomorphs, and geometrics. As is typical of this style, some of the elements are enigmatic and of an uncertain representation. Below are some of the photos I took that day– I hope you enjoy them!
