The Starving Man Galleries
I visited The Starving Man Site twice during my week long visit to Petrified Forest N.P. in October of 2022. My first visit was on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 19, 2022. The other visit was on the afternoon of Friday, October 21, 2022. For details of these visits and an explanation why I visited this site twice, see my blog. I am grateful that I was able to find, and photograph, this iconic Petrified Forest petroglyph. I hope you enjoy my photos!
I made a third visit to the Starving Man site on the morning of September 27, 2024 with my friend Richard. Instead of approaching Mountain Lion Mesa from Martha’s Butte, we decided to hike in from the northwest using a service road that intersects the main park road about 3.15 miles north of the Martha’s Butte trailhead. Although a little further than hiking in from Martha’s Butte (1.74 miles vs. 2.11 miles) it is much easier hiking on the service road since you don’t have to cross the ridge and other landforms between Martha’s Butte and Starving man. For more details of our hike to Starving Man that day, see my blog. In the last set of galleries below you will find some of the photos I took that day.

I Didn’t Take Many Photos at The Starving Man on My Second Visit. I Took a Few, In Case I Had Better Light Than I Had On My First Visit. The First Six Photos In This Last Gallery Were Taken With My Samsung S22 Cellphone, While The Last Three Photos Were Taken With My D7200 Nikon Camera. Did The Light Make a Difference? I Would Love To Visit This Iconic Site In Early Morning Light…Maybe Someday!

An Excellent Resource….
An excellent resource for The Starving Man site (PEFO 88A – 11, Locus 3) is Susan J. Wells 1988 report entitled “PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK BOUNDAY SURVEY, 1988: THE FINAL SEASON”. If you are going to spend a lot of time in that area of the park, I would highly recomend it. Here are a couple of pages that are particulary relevant to this site:
