Beautiful, complex, and haunting...The White Shaman, February 23, 2018.

The White Shaman Galleries

I first visited the White Shaman in 2014.  Looking at the pictures I took on that initial visit, I decided against posting any of them here —  the light was horrible.  It was late afternoon and the magnificent panel was half in shadow and half in bright sunlight, which, of course, makes for very poor images.  So, the pictures below were taken on an early morning visit to the site in February of 2018.  The light was softer, and uniform, and these photos came out much better.  This is a magnificent and sacred place.  If you ever find yourself in the Del Rio/Comstock area, I would highly recommend that to go out to Seminole Canyon State Park and participate in one of their weekly tours to the White Shaman (The Witte Museum now owns the site, and provides tours most Saturdays, September through May, in cooperation with the folks at Seminole Canyon).  I would also highly recommend that you you take a look at Dr. Carolyn Boyd’s book, which offers a scholarly look at this beautiful site.  Dr. Boyd is now an endowed professor at Texas State University, training the next generation of archaeologists.  Dorothy and I proud to have contributed to the endowment for the chair, and I am fortunate to know Dr. Boyd through my support of her non-profit organization, SHUMLA.  I hope you enjoy my photos of this most amazing work of art!

The photos in the gallery above were taken with my Nikon D7200.  The photos in this next gallery were taken with my cellphone (Samsung S7) and give an idea of the scale and setting of the rock shelter where the White Shaman mural is located, high above the Pecos River, just upstream from the Highway 90 Pecos River Bridge….
