Richard Lloyd Jones Residence, “Westhope”
1929
3704 S. Birmingham Ave.
Tulsa, Oklahoma 74105
Dorothy and I paid a “drive-by” visit to this amazing house on the morning of Wednesday, March 29, 2023. We were driving from Bartlesville, Oklahoma (where we visited Price Tower) to Bentonville, Arkansas (where we would visit the Bachman-Wilson House later that day) by way of Tulsa, so we could stop and see this house.
This was the first house FLW designed in Oklahoma, and it was for his cousin Richard Lloyd Jones, who was the founder of The Tulsa Tribune. Jones lived in the 10,000 squard foot house until his death at age 90. The house sits on four acres and is built of glass and textile block. The living room is flanked by a study and three bedrooms, which is imitated on the second floorwith children’s bedrooms opening to a roof garden. A half-level down are a kitchen, pantry, and billiards room. There is a five car garage with servants quarters in a detached structure. The size and scope of this amazing. There were about twenty men hard at work on the house during our visit. A docent at the Crystal Bridges Museum said the house had recently sold and was undergoing extensive refurbishing. I would love to see the inside of this house! The decorative textile block on the outside was Mayan style and of particular note were the cube shaped lighting fixtures near the entry. Here are some photos we took from the street.
