Indian Head Gallery

On the afternoon of January 6, 2012 I visited the Indian Head Rock Art Site located near the western border of Big Bend National Park.  Although the site is inside the park, it is accessed from outside the park. To get to the trailhead exit the west entrance to the park at Maverick Junction and go about 4 miles on Highway 118 (toward Alpine).  Turn Right on Indian Head Road (dirt road just north of Big Bend Resorts and Adventures) and go about 2.25 miles to the parking area, which is just outside the park boundary.  The site is a short hike along the base of a mountain on your left.  This site was fun to explore.  There are petroglyphs, pictographs, and grinding holes scattered around the site.  Nothing really spectacular, but enough to make it interesting.  If you walk far enough you come to a small spring.  I hope you enjoy the photos I took that day!

This is one of the better petroglyph panels at Indian Head.
Detail of an unusual element.
Another nicely executed element.
Detail of the lower part of the panel.
Not a lot going on here...minimalistic.
Snakes?
Nice design.
My imagination or an anthropomorph.
Unique and interesting.
The signature pictograph at Indian Head. Note the handprint. This panel is in a protected shelter area.
Mountains perhaps?
This one would benefit from d-stretch.
View from inside the shelter at Indian Head that has the pictographs.
One of my favorites from Indian Head.
Unique figure here.
Part of a larger panel. Unfortunately my other shots of this panel were over exposed.
Anthropomorph, or just another geometric design?
The pigment appears much darker on this little pictograph.
I decided to call this one the Wishbone Panel.
One of the bedrock features at Indian Head.
Another work of art-- my 2015 FJ Cruiser, Ultimate Trail Teams Edition, all decked out for the Big Bend backcountry. I took this photo at the Indian Head trail head.
