The young park ranger who was kind enough to show me some sites near the visitor center on my August 9, 2012 visit to Hueco Tanks.

Hueco Tanks Galleries

I have visited the Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site on two occasions.  My first visit was on August 9, 2015, as Dorothy and I were returning from my ill-fated Pecos Conference trip.  My second visit was a February 17, 2019 field trip that was part of the TAS Rock Art Academy that was held in El Paso.  Click here to skip forward to the photos from the TAS field trip.  Hueco Tanks is a special place and I am grateful to have visited there!

The Following Pictures Are From My August 9, 2015 Visit

The first area we visited had a number of interesting pictographs, mostly done in white and red.
Abstract?
Nicely designed element here.
Significant natural degradation in this area.
Red linear?
A busy panel...more than one artist?
Is that a handprint in the center?
Looks like Wayland also fashioned a fancy frame.
Over the moon.
A line of anthropomorphs?
Hueco Tanks is known for its masks, but this is the only one I saw this visit.
I believe this is thought to represent a jaguar (from ears and spots).
Bird?
Too bad about the dedgradation and graffiti.
You have to lay flat on your back to see and photograph this one.
Bird element?
A little closer view of the bird element.
An intricate anthropomorph...was difficult to photograph this one!
Not sure what this one is.
A little different perspective of the anthropomorph.
A number of the images in this gallery were on the ceiling of this shallow cave/overhang area. Note the bedrock feature and how slick the lower rock surface is, from years of use.
Another tight area that contained some rock art.
