Green-crowned Brilliant

Heliodoxa jacula

eBird describes the Green-crowned Brilliant like this:  Fairly large hummingbird, sleek and long-tailed with straight bill. Male is entirely emerald green with small blue throat patch only visible at some angles. Female has spotted green breast; note conspicuous white mustache stripe and white spot behind eye. Found in forested habitats and edges; visits feeders.

The Birds of the World website introduces this bird with this descriptive information:  The Green-crowned Brilliant is a hummingbird species found in southern Central America and northwestern South America, where its disjunct range covers several mountain ranges. It is locally common and readily seen in forest and adjacent human-altered habitats from the foothills to the highlands, where it frequently visits artificial feeders.

I met, and photographed, my first Green-crowned Brilliant on the afternoon of Sunday, February 12, 2023 in Costa Rica.  Our birding group with Tropical Birding Tours was at the Hummingbird Gallery of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve when we watched a number of the hummingbirds at the feeders.
