VIEW OF EAGLE CAVE FROM THE FLOOR OF MILE CANYON NEAR LANGTRY, TEXAS. DECEMBER 13, 2014.

Eagle Cave Gallery

On December 13, 2014 I joined a small group of folks from the Rock Art Foundation for a hike to see the sites in Mile Canyon near Langtry, Texas.  One of the sites we visited was Eagle Cave.  I had no idea that in March of 2016 I would spend my Spring Break from my studies at Texas State to work on an excavation at this very site.  There is not a lot of rock art still visible in Eagle Cave, but the photos I took that day contained enough detail to match them to Forrest Kirkland’s drawing of the site.  Here are some of the photos I took, as well as Kirkland’s Drawing.

THE RED ELEMENT THAT LOOKS LIKE A TARGET IS IN THE CENTER OF THIS PHOTO.

PLATE 9, NO.1-- "THESE PAINTINGS ARE ALL THAT REMAIN OF WHAT WERE ONCE A LARGE NUMBER OF PICTOGRPAHS IN EAGLE CAVE, MILE CANYON, NEAR LANGTRY. THEY ORIGINALLY EXTENDED SOME FIFTY YARDS ALONG THE BACK WALL FROM THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE SHELTER. AT THIS CORNER THE PICTOGRAPHS ARE ABOUT TEN FEET FROM THE FLOOR AND HAVE BEE PROTECTED, BUT ABOUT THIRTY FEET FROM THE CORNER THE FLORR RISES TO WITHIN A FEW FEET OF THE PICTOGRAPHS AND FROM THAT POINGT ON, ONLY INDEFINITE SMEARS OF COLOR REMAIN".
