Das Rec 2020...The Quest To Get In Shape
I have never been a particularly gifted athlete, and concentrated physical activity has never been anything that I particularly enjoy. As a result, it is a constant battle to stay in shape. In 1976 my father had open heart surgery, and I visited him in the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital in Houston. On that day I made a decision to make some changes in my life, hoping I would not find myself in the same situation some day. Perhaps the best shape of my adult life was during the late 1980s when I did a lot of bike riding on a regular basis. Over the last number of years, I have settled on walking as my activity of choice. It is not glamerous, and I rarely break a big sweat, but it seems to get the job done. I also need a specific goal to keep me motivated. Last year, it was my trip to Australia that kept me walking. This year I am planning a trip to South Africa in September to hike the Drakensberg area in search of rock art. In April, I plan to take one last walk with my friend Vaughn Hadenfeldt as we backpack in Grand Gulch. So, Dorothy and I joined Das Rec on January 1st of this year and I have been walking. I decided to document my mileage as an additional way to motivate myself. Here are my miles walked this year at Das Rec…
