The City of Rocks is a unique New Mexico State Park.

City of Rocks State Park Gallery

In the fall of 2016 I was enrolled at Texas State University studying Anthropology.  I had a week off at Thanksgiving and I decided to use part of that time to visit a couple of classic rock art sites and to explore a little in the area around Silver City, New Mexico.  The previous August I had traveled through Silver City, New Mexico, on the the way to the Pecos Conference and I decided it would be a nice area to explore for a couple of days.  While planning my trip, I decided to camp at City of Rocks State Park.  When I checked in at Park Headquarters, I learned there was some rock art there and over the course of the two nights I camped there, I was able to find and enjoy it.  I found a few petroglyphs in an area of the park that also had some grinding holes and was supposed to be an area where prehistoric people camped.  I also found one very small, and one quite large Kokopelli figure.  A friend of mine who is quite knowledgeable about New Mexico rock art thinks they are not authentic, but I am not so sure.  Regardless of their authenticity, I had a great time looking for them.  I also had a great time camping at City of Rocks and would highly recommend it if you are ever in the area.  You might also stop by and visit the nearby Faywood Hot Springs.  It is a nice place to relax after a day of hiking!  To see my blog post that includes my visit to City of Rocks State Park, look here.  I hope you enjoy my photos of the rock art in that beautiful little park!
