THE ICONIC BUCKHORN WASH PICTOGRAPH SITE SPANS OVER 130 FEET OF THE CANYON WALL.

Buckhorn Wash Pictograph Gallery

On the late afternoon of Thursday, March 22, 2018, I visited the magnificent Buckhorn Wash Pictograph Site.  This site is truly one of the iconic rock art sites in Utah and I am grateful that I got to experience it.  The picture in the heading above gives you an idea of the scope of this site.  It is located 23.3 miles north of Interstate Highway 70 on Buckhorn Draw Road.  The site is well marked and has barriers in place to protect the art.  The Old Spanish Trail passed through Buckhorn Draw and went right past this site, resulting in a lot of vandalism.  The State of Utah and Emery county restored the site in 1996.  While natural forces continue to degrade the pictographs, they are in remarkably good shape.  Most of the elements are Barrier Canyon Style, dated to the Late Archaic period– this makes them 1,500 to 4,000 years old.  For my blog post that includes my visit to this site, look here.  In the photos below I have attempted my best to capture the magic of this place– an impossible task!  If you ever have the opportunity, go experience this place in person– you will not regret it!  I hope you enjoy my photos…
