O’Dell Hidden Cove Petroglyphs Gallery

Early on the morning of April 10, 2019.  Billy Ward and I visited the Hidden Cove Petroglyph Park, outside the City of Holbrook, Arizona.  The site is owned by the City of Holbrook, and is located near the city owned golf course.  The principal steward of the site is a long time city employee named Mike O’Dell.  Mike has been the driving force behind the preservation and development of the site.  You must call ahead and schedule a visit to the site with Mike, since the site is under lock and key and you cannot get in without Mike or someone else accompanying you.  We called Mike the day before our visit (his cell is 928 241-0293) and he graciously agreed to meet us (at the golf course) at 6 a.m. the following morning for a tour of the petroglyph site.  (We were looking at a forecast for extremely high winds the next day,  and Mike was nice enough to let us come out very early to beat the worst of the wind.)  We enjoyed this site-  there are some very nice petroglyph panels in the small canyon.  It was also a real pleasure to be guided someone who is so passionate about this sacred place, and eager to share it, as well as his insight and unique knowledge, with others…thank you Mike O’Dell!  Hope you enjoy our photos from that special day.  To see my blog post that covers the trip that includes my visit to Hidden Cove, look here. 

A SAD UPDATE:

On Sunday, October 16, 2022, I learned from a Park Ranger at Petrified Forest N.P. that Mike O’Dell had passed away.  From his obituary  I learned that he passed on February 9, 2022 at the age of 65.  I was gratified to learn that Mike was honored by the City of Holbrook in March 2022 by renaming the petroglyph site in his honor.  I have changed the name of the site, also in his honor.  You will be missed Mike!
