Petrified Forest N. P. Rock Art Galleries

I first visited Petrified Forest National Park on December 1, 2017.  I really didn’t do much research prior to my visit, but decided to drive through the park and stop at Newspaper Rock and Puerco Pueblo.  These two sites were listed on park literature has having rock art.  I also wanted to see the Mountain Lion Petroglyph (pictured above), but was unable to see it on that day.  I had entered the park by the south entrance and by the time I made it to the Painted Desert Inn, it was already closed.  The rock art I saw on that visit was quite nice, but access was extremely limited and park visitors are not allowed to get close to it.  So I made a mental note that I needed to do some research and return there some day.  To see the blog I posted that includes my first visit to Petrified Forest National Park (titled A Haphazard Rock Art Trip To Soothe The Soul”), look here. 

I next visited Petrified Forest on the tail end of our (Billy Ward and I) Spring Rock Art Tour in April of 2019.  I had a hike to Martha’s Butte planned for us, and we planned to pester park rangers about access to some other sites I had read about in a blog.  Unfortunately, the day we visited the park was during “The Great Spring Blizzard of 2019”.  We did one short hike into Puerco Wash and the immediate area around “The Howling Man” (near Puerco Pueblo), but the high winds, sleet, and snow chased us out of the park in short order.  We also managed to stop by the Painted Desert Inn and were able to see the Mountain Lion Petroglyph (pictured above), so I was at least able to cross that off my list of things to do.  Hope you enjoy my photos of this beautiful place and hope you get a chance to see it in person some day!  To see my blog post that includes this visit to Petrified Forest National Park (titled “Training For a Trip to Nowhere”), look here.
