Notes From Xavi’s Lecture on the Hyacinth Macaw
On the evening of August 28, 2023, Southwild’s Jaguar Flotel Naturalist, Xavier Tobin (Xavi) presented a lecture on the beautiful Hyacinth Macaw. This was our Jeff Parker Tour Group’s last night at the Flotel, and it was a fitting end to our stay. Here are a few of the interesting facts that Xavi presented that night:
- There are 17 species of Macaws
- Macaws are large, long-tailed parrots
- All macaws are parrots, but not all parrots are macaws
- Macaws form a life pair bond
- The primary food source of the Hyacinth Macaw is the nut of the Acuri Palm
- When feeding as a group, the Hyacinth Macaws have one member that acts as a sentinel, or lookout for the others
