Orange-winged Parrot Gallery

Amazona amazonica

The Birds of the World website offers this description of the Orange-winged Parrot:  In contrast to many parrots, which have declined massively as a result of hunting, trade, and habitat destruction, the Orange-winged Parrot remains surprisingly abundant over much of its very wide South American range. Exclusively found in the lowlands east of the Andes, it is distributed from northern Colombia south to eastern Brazil, including the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The Orange-winged Parrot is able to persist virtually wherever there are still tall trees, although it is undoubtedly more numerous in better-forested areas. Several other Amazona parrots show orange patches in the secondaries at rest and in flight, but this species is generally smaller than most of the rest, and shows only a comparatively small area of yellow feathering on the face, with blue lores.

I saw and photographed my first Orange-winged Parrots on the morning of August 13, 2023 in the Amazon Basin Region of Brazil.  Our small group with Jeff Parker Tours had arrived at a private fazenda (ranch) to watch a Harpy Eagle nest when I spotted the Orange-winged Parrots near the ranch house.  For a more detailed description of this day, look here at my blog post on my Brazil trip.  Here are some of my photos of this interesting little parrot.

THE TWO ORANGE-WINGED PARROTS I WATCHED ON AUGUST 18, 2023. I SAW THESE BIRDS PERCHED NEAR THE RANCH HOUSE OF THE RANCH WHERE WE WERE WATCHING THE HARPY EAGLE NEST.
ANOTHER LOOK AT THE ORANGE-WINGED PARROTS.

I saw my friend the Orange-winged Parrot again on the morning of August 19, 2023, while on a boat ride on the Juruena River in the Amazon Basin of Brazil.  I was with a group from Jeff Parker Tours, and we saw a pair of these parrots perched on a tree near the river.  Look here to see my blog about my trip to Brazil which includes details of the boat ride when I saw these birds.  Here are a couple of photos I took that morning.
