On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, I made a quick trip to Dallas, Texas, to visit my birder friend Steve Jordan. Steve had recently fallen and broken his hip and was in a rehab facility in the northeast part of town. I left my home a little after 4:00 a.m. and arrived at the rehab facility a little after 8:00 a.m. I visited with Steve and started home about 10:30 a.m. Since I was on the tail end of a two day fast, I decided to stop at Smokey Joe’s BBQ and pick up some food for supper, when I would be breaking my fast.
I arrived at Smokey Joe’s a little before their opening time of 11:00 a.m. I was second in line, and two more people showed up before they opened. I found a small, tidy establishment that was suitably decorated with historical photos and articles about the joint, and other appropriate BBQ parapernalia. I bought a pound of brisket, a pound of ribs, a side of Cucumber Salad, and a Bread Pudding (which was on sale the day of my visit). I had brought my small Yeti cooler to carry the food back home. I had picked up some ice right before I got to Smokey Joe’s to keep the BBQ as fresh as possible. I transferred the brisket and ribs to large ziploc bags, hoping to keep them moist. I loaded up the ice chest and headed home.
When I arrived home I transferred the BBQ and sides from my Yeti to the fridge. At dinner time, Dorothy heated up the brisket and ribs, and had them for supper. She said they were tasty and tender and that she enjoyed them. I also had her taste the cucumber salad and the bread pudding. I ate one rib cold, and had one piece of brisket, also cold, which I cut up and put on the salad I was having for Dinner. I did not taste the sauce, the pudding, or the cucumber salad.
The Verdict…
I decided to give Smokey Joe’s BBQ six stars out of ten. I am not sure this rating is an accurate or fair one however. Had we eaten the meat at the joint while it was freshly cut and hot, the rating might have been higher. Dorothy said the bread pudding was not bad, but too sweet with the dominance of what appeared to be canned peaches in the dish. The facility had a cozy feel, but is quite small, and the outdoor seating offers no protection from the elements– I imagine it is not used much during the summer or winter. My impression is that this joint emphasizes the sandwiches and the more innovative, non-traditional items on its eclectic menu. Would I stop by this place again? Absolutely!
