Our Overall Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (Eight Hearts Out of Ten)
Wednesday morning, February 2, 2022, Dorothy and I left the lake and headed for Houston, where we had plans to attend a UH Basketball game and spend the night with our good friends, Charlie and Lynn Pollard. We decided to visit one of the Texas Monthly Top Fifty BBQ joints on the way. We selected Feges BBQ, out of three possible joints on the west side of Houston, and I am glad we did!
We arrived at 8217 Long Point Rd. around 11:20 a.m. I had been a little worried about the Long Point neighborhood, which has a reputation for being rough and run down. But times are changing, and we found Feges BBQ to be located in an attractive, modern building. There were a few people already dining, and a few people in line as we entered the joint. We immediately noted a spacious, clean, well-run vibe. There was ample seating, inside and out. Next to the ordering line is an attractive display of t-shirts, books, sauces, et al. Feges had paper menus you could look at while you were in line. Dorothy immediately noticed that they had salads and BBQ Bowls. I immediately noticed they had Rum Raisin Bread Pudding and Big Red Ice Cream! We placed our order: Dorothy got a Feges Bowl with lettuce, elote, sour cream, avocado, cracklin crumble, and smoked chicken, hold the pickled red onions and jalapenos. I ordered a half pound of brisket, a half pound of pork ribs, Pimento Mac & Cheese, Charred Coleslaw, and Rum Raisin Bread Pudding. After placing our order, we got a number, collected our silverware (real silverware wrapped in clothe napkins no less!) and sauce (Sweet Red, Alabama White, and Texas Gold, all in clean, attractive squeeze bottles) and headed to a table in the outside seating area. I am not a fan of having your order delivered to you — I like to watch the meat sliced and observe the food preparation area. In a reasonably short time, out food was delivered to our table. It was excellent! The brisket and ribs were moist, tender, and flavorful. The sides were fine, and Dorothy reported her Feges Bowl was really tasty and had a good amount of chicken on it. She was surprised and happy to find an entre that was pretty much on her diet. I enjoyed the bread pudding, which was also very good. While waiting for our food, we noticed that there was a cute children’s play area adjacent to the main dining room. We also noticed a steady stream of customers.
We really liked this place and would highly recommend it. In fact, of the 8 joints we have visited so far, this was our favorite. So, if you find yourself in Houston, give it a try!
A Note About Bathrooms…
No BBQ joint is going to get a good rating from me if the bathrooms aren’t clean! The bathrooms at Feges were sparkling, which made me very happy!
