Wednesday, December 22, 2021, was a special day for Dorothy and I. That day, Dorothy had her final radiation treatment and got to “Ring the Bell”. It had been an arduous fall, with Dorothy having a biopsy and three surgeries on her left breast, followed by a month of daily radiation treatments.
So, I wanted to take Dorothy somewhere for lunch to celebrate this memorable occasion. I decided that we should drive down to Gonzales and have lunch at Baker Boys BBQ. The Texas Monthly review of Baker Boys had us ready to enjoy some great BBQ. We arrived there a little after 11:00 a.m., and there were already a number of customers there. Baker Boys is a little unusual, in that opens at 10:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, while many of the joints on the Texas Monthly Top 50 list are closed several days a week and usually don’t open until 11:00 a.m.
Dorothy ordered a two-meat plate with brisket and pork loin, with sides of cole slaw and beans. I ordered a two-meat plate with pork ribs and sausage, with sides of cheesy potato salad and regular potato salad. Upon the recommendation of Texas Monthly, I also ordered a chocolate meringue pie, “chilled”, not room temperature. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. Dorothy’s pork loin was okay, but the brisket, though tender, was very fatty. My ribs and sausage were okay, but did not stand out in any way. Other than the cole slaw and cheesy potatoes (which were good), the sides were just acceptable; nothing about them that was memorable. The pie was especially disappointing. I asked for it chilled, but what I got was frozen. And, honestly, it reminded me of a piece of pie you might get at a cafeteria. I feel that I need to let you know that Baker Boys lost points for overall presentation and cleanliness. I went to the men’s room as soon as we arrived, and I was shocked at how dirty it was, especially for that early in the day. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in quite a while. And outside, there was junk stacked near the entrance (in lieu of outside seating) and lots of junk out back. Overall, Dorothy and I agreed that the food and the atmosphere were subpar compared to the joints we had already visited. I doubt that we will return to Baker Boys BBQ anytime soon.
