A very impressive and unique anthropomorph that Vaughn calls "Gonad Man". March 22nd, 2014.

Gonad Man Gallery

I visited the site my friend Vaughn Hadenfeldt calls “Gonad Man” on the afternoon of March 22, 2014.  I wanted Billy to meet Vaughn so I arranged for us to meet up with him during our Spring 2014 rock art trip.  After spending most of the day at Cedar Point, Vaughn, Billy, and I stopped by a site that Vaughn wanted us to see on our way back to Bluff.  That site turned out to be Gonad Man, a large petroglyph that depicts a male of obvious high status.  The figure is adorned with a head ornament, a gorget, items in both hands, and very prominent male genitalia.  There was also some rock art worth seeing on the hike to see Gonad Man.  Also of interest was the approach to the site–  you had to crawl through a small opening to reach the petroglyph, which overlooks a small canyon on the backside of a rock ridge, which, I believe, is part of the Comb Ridge complex.  Hope you enjoy my photos of this beautiful place!

THE SUN WAS NOT IDEAL AS WE GOT OUR FIRST LOOK AT THE GONAD MAN.
TO THE RIGHT OF GONAD MAN IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN IMAGE THAT INCLUDES A SERPENT OF SOME SORT.

VAUGHN AND BILLY DISCUSSING SOMETHING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CANYON, ACROSS FROM GONAD MAN. i NEVER COULD SEE IT, BUT VAUGHN SAID IT WAS SOME KIND OF A SOLSTICE/SOLAR MARKER. VAUGHN'S KNOWLEDGE OF CEDAR MESA IS ENCYCLOPEDIC, AND QUITE AMAZING.
THE LIGHT WAS A LITTLE BETTER FOR THIS SHOT OF THE GONAD MAN.

The gallery below contains photographs that I took on our hike to Gonad Man, as well as a nearby midden area that Vaughn took us to before we headed back into Bluff where we called it a day and took Vaughn and his wife Marica to dinner, along with their daughter.  The petroglyphs we saw included several stunning anthropomorphs, similar to some of the figures downriver at the Big Kachina Panel.  Amazing works of art!
