Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Galleries
On the front end of a rock art trip I took in the summer of 2019, I visited the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Site. This visit was on the front end of my mid-summer rock art trip. To see my blog post that covers my visit to Mesa Prieta, look here. I had a tour with one of the Mesa Prieta volunteers scheduled for the morning of July 10, 2019. I arrived in Espanola (where I stayed in a motel) the afternoon before and, with a little time to kill I drove out to the site and walked the road and took a number of photographs (the site was fenced, locked, and posted). I also drove over to the Canova area, and took a few photos of petroglyphs I could see from the road. The next day, after my tour, I returned to Canova and did a little climbing around and taking a few more photographs. I enjoyed this area, and very much appreciate the efforts of Katherine Wells and her non-profit for their efforts at conserving and sharing the petroglyphs found there. Here are some of my photos of this special place.

Galleries From the Canova Area Near the Mesa Prieta Site….
As I mentioned above, on the morning of my tour at Mesa Prieta, I drove the road to Canova and was able to see some rock art along the ridge above the road. After the tour, I asked the Mesa Prieta tour guide if he knew if any of the land along the road to Canova was public. He said he didn’t know for sure, but if it was not fenced and not to close to a house, it was probably ok to look around. So that is what I did for several hours that afternoon. Here are some of the photos I took from the Canova area. The first set was from my morning drive along the road to Canova. The rest of the pictures are from my afternoon exploring, when I was able to hike up to some of the panels.
