The Ceremonial Spear Cave Rock Art Galleries at Mt. Borradaile
After lunch on September 11, 2019, Locky asked me if I would like to do some exploring. He explained that although he has worked and guided at Mt. Borradaile for seven years, there are still areas he has never explored. I enthusiastically replied “Yes!”. Exploring and looking for rock art (especially in rich cultural environments) is one of my favorite things to do. So we drove to the dock on Left Billabong and took a boat to an area that Locky had never hiked or explored. We docked on a rocky area that had six or seven crocodiles lying in the sun. We set out for a rock formation about a third of a mile from the billabong. It did not take long for us to start finding rock art, and Locky appeared genuinely excited to see some art panels for the first time. His excitement increased as we climbed higher and found a small cave that contained a large (about 8 feet long) ceremonial spear. He had heard rumors about this artifact, but had never located it or seen it. It was such a satisfying way to spend our afternoon! Hope you enjoy my photos of what I decided to call “Ceremonial Spear Cave Rock Art Sites”.
