Monster Rock Galleries
On my first afternoon in Kalumburu (Friday, September 20, 2019), after getting settled in at the mission compound, I headed north out of town to explore Monster Rock, also known as Anscar. The name Monster Rock (known to the aboriginals as Malan Rock) comes from a dreamtime story where the “two body monster” turned into stone (aboriginals know it as the story of Penda Gudje). The area is also known as Anscar, so named because it was a favorite place for Father Anscar McPhee of the mission to walk and meditate. It was easy to get to — not far out of town and visible from the road to McGowan’s. Upon arrival, I decided to explore the area to the west (ie to the left of) of Monster Rock. I spent a couple of hours rock hopping, climbing, and exploring. I found a few small panels of art, but nothing to write home about. I enountered a LARGE walleroo, or perhaps it was a kangeroo, on two occasions. Wasn’t quick enough to get a photo either time, but it was a magnificent animal. By the time I headed back to Monster Rock, it was getting late, and I still wanted to drive out to the beach at McGowans. There is a little more art around Monster Rock, but again, nothing outstanding. I am sure there is more in the area, if one had the time to explore or a guide. Below are some of the photos I took that afternoon at Monster Rock.
