I spent the morning of Sunday, February 13, 2022 bird watching at the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center on the south side of San Antonio. I had looked up 2M Smokehouse and knew that it was fairly close to Mitchell Lake, so I decided to make an impromptu visit, realizing that the place might be sold out on the afternoon of Superbowl Sunday. I arrived at 2M just before 2:00 p.m. and found it not very crowded at all. The physical facility is somewhat old, but has a well worn homey feel to it, much like Lavaca BBQ. There was one person in front of me in line, and the man behind the counter politely pointed out to me that he was out of everything but brisket and turkey, in case I was waiting for pork ribs or pulled pork. I decided to order a pound of brisket, and 4oz servings of all the sides they had left, namely, chicharoni macaroni, Mexican street corn, and sweet coleslaw (they were out of Maria’s beans). They had a case full of different cheesecakes and a few tarts, so I bought a raspberry chocolate mousse tart that was shaped like a heart, as a Valentine surprise for Dorothy. The meat was cut in front of me (which I like, of course) so it didn’t take long to get my food to go. As I left, I took note of the dining rooms (both inside and out) and the decor of the joint. I made the 45 minute drive home, and Dorothy and I proceeded to taste our bounty.
The 2M brisket was excellent– very tender, moist, and flavorful with a perfect smoke ring. The Mexican corn was unique, and very, very good. The other two sides were also tasty. I didn’t try the tart (I am trying to loose weight) but Dorothy tasted it and reported that it too was very good. In short, we really enjoyed the food I picked up from 2M, and we both agreed we need to go there again. I can’t wait to try their ribs and pulled pork (and, if my diet allows, a piece of cheesecake)!
