I made a drive-by visit to the Eric and Pat Pratt House on the afternoon of September 3, 2024, during my visit to Galesburg, MI, and my stay at the Eppstein House, which is next door. When I arrived at the Galesburg Country Homes subdivision, the Prat House was the first house I saw as I turned onto Hawthorne Drive. I was pleasantly surprized to see that the house was clearly visible from the road, and offerred a nearly unobstructed view of the structure. The house is an in-line plan and utilized a 4 foot square grid layout. The Pratts acted as their own contractors, and made the sand-colored textile blocks used to construct the house. Apparently, the Pratts did not fully understand the unit grid system, and you can see the results, especially on the front of the home where the decorated blocks show an obvious error, with the design ending on the right hand side a half block short of a complete design. The house was constructed in three stages, and, along with the grid errors, the Pratts made a minor revision to enlarge the studio, which was often used as a workshop. This visually stunning house was a great way to be introduced to the Wright’s Galesburg project. Below are some of the photos I took — I hope you enjoy them!
