I had the good fortune to visit the Meyer House on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 3, 2024, after a chance encounter with the owner resulted in him inviting me up to look at his house. For details of how this actually happened, look at my blog. William Storrer, in the Fourth Edition of his book The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, a Complete Catalog, gives this descriptive information for this unusual and beautiful home:
A solar hemicycle facing east down a gentle slope, the Meyer house is designed on a circular segment unit module 7 1/2 degrees wide by 32 inches (2 blocks) deep. The central two-story drum sits in the crest of the hilll, enclosing stairs between the lower-floor living room and the upper-level carport and bedrooms. The bedroom “wing” is set over the rear of the living room, giving it a two-story-high ceiling at the glazed facade. The master bedroom at the end of the balcony gallery needs no fourth wall because it gains privacy by its overviewing position; thus this solar hemicycle has almost a “one-room” house configuration. Pairs of 4-by-16-inch blocks, plus 8-by-8-inch blocks, were used instead of Wright’s desired Brickcrete block. Wood trim is Mahogany.
It was such a pleasure to visit this amazing home, especially since it was a beautiful sunny afternoon and the gardens were blooming and attracting a variety of birds — the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. I hope you enjoy my photographs and I hope they convey some measure of just how stunning this home is. And many thanks to Doug LeBrecque, for his kindness and generosity in sharing his home with me!
