THE CENTRAL PART OF THE UTE RAID PANEL IN CANYON DEL MUERTO, MARCH 7, 2026.

Ute Raid Panel Gallery

CDM – 6

I visited the Ute Raid Panel in Canyon del Muerto on the afternoon of Saturday, March 7, 2026 during my Spring Rock Art Trip.  An 1858 raid in the canyon in 1858 is memorialized in this small panel by the Navaho, using black and white paint and charcoal.  Two aspects of this small panel caught my attention.  First, the size disparity between the Ute horseman and the Navajo warriors who were on foot.  Second, the Ute figures are much more detailed than the Navajo figures, which are basically stick figures in most cases.  The panel creates the illusion of movement and speed and is striking in that respect.
